Towson University's Campus Recreation Services hosted the 26th annual 5K (3.1
miles) Turkey Run Saturday, November 22. They raised more then $450 for Alex's
Lemonade Stand. Although the temperature was in the mere 30's, many people
came out to complete the race around the university campus.
Lauren Humphries, a graduate assistant for Marketing and Special Events for
Campus Recreation Services (CRS), helped coordinate the Turkey Run and was
glad to see the number of participants increase.
"Last year we had 35 participants. Today we had 45," Humphries said.
"We were really happy with the turnout, since we were expecting between 30-50. Of
the 45, 30 participants were either TU students, faculty, or staff. The remaining 15 were friends and family members of the TU affiliates, or people from the Towson/Baltimore community."
Towson has been paired up with Alex's Lemonade Stand for five years and, according to Humphries, in 2007 Towson University was named one of the top 100 hosts in the nation for fundraising for the charity. The money given to Alex's Lemonade Stand goes towards finding a cure for all children with cancer.
The foundation was created in memory of Alex Scott, a little girl from Connecticut, who was diagnosed with cancer. While Alex was sick she set up a lemonade stand to raise money to find a cure. In 2004 she passed away at the age of eight but had raised over $1 million. Humphries is proud to donate the
Turkey Run money to a great cause.
"It's just a charity that we really believe in and we like the cause that the money goes to. We're very excited to be able to give the money to such a great foundation," Humphries said.
He added, "Last year we made a little over $400, so our numbers went up in terms of participants and the amount of money we raised this year. Overall, this event was definitely a success."
Christopher Malone, graduate assistant for competitive sports at CRS, helped establish the connection Towson has with the charity, and while donating money is rewarding in itself, he said the members of the Turkey Run last year got a

I participated in the run, I felt like the word got out much better, even after it was over. Next year should be even better.

Keep in mind that cancer is a terrible disease. The goal is to get rid of it. That means no more cancer research and no more money raising events. That is what curing cancer brings with it. (Continued…)
