The 2009 Relay for Life kickoff party took place Nov. 5, as participants and students learned the history and details of the upcoming event.
The date for the 2nd annual Relay for Life, which will be held at Towson University was
announced for Friday March 27th through Saturday March 28th. The event will take place from 7p.m. to 7 a.m. at the Towson Center. Relay for Life allows students as well as the Towson community to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams are formed and members walk around a track throughout the night. At least one member of the team is asked to walk the track at all times.
The kickoff party began with a mock luminary ceremony. Relay for Life committee member Alexis Smith, a junior speech pathology major, is in charge of organizing the luminaries.
"I just like to help people. I joined last year when we started to do the first annual Relay for Life," said Smith. "It's the main part of relay for someone to get their little time."
White bags with names of loved ones who have survived, are battling or lost their lives by cancer glowed from lights within as they lined the front of the Chesapeake Rooms in the University Union. Smith and other committee members meet twice a week to throw out ideas and plan for the upcoming event. She said the luminaries were a success last year and has high expectations for the
circle of hope in the 2009 Relay for Life.
"It lined the whole track. I'd say over 100," Smith said. "We would like to
have double because we'll have double the space and hopefully double the people."
The Relay for Life was in Burdick Gym last year and was moved to the Towson Center to provide more space. A past participant, Laura Mauceri, junior political science major, was not in favor of the change.
"Boo, I don't like it. You're walking back at whatever time the next morning. I think it's too far away."
But the location change will not discourage Mauceri from participating again.
